Kanekó:ta Program Teachers

Kathleen Yates
B.A, M.Ed
Head Teacher – English Language Arts, French, Social Sciences, & Options teacher
I have been teaching at the First Nations Regional Adult Education Centre (FNRAEC) since its inception. Prior to that, I worked with the New Frontiers School Board and the Commission Scolaire des Grands Seigneuries, but I started my career in industry. I have a bachelor’s degree in English Literature and Creative Writing, a certificate in teaching English as a Second Language, a Master’s in Teaching and Learning, and a Graduate Certificate in Educational Leadership.
Currently, I teach at the FNRAEC Kanekó:ta campus in downtown Montreal.

Lynwood Paulette
Math Teacher
For nine years, I’ve taught at FNRAEC at our three campuses, focusing on Mathematics, French, and Computers.
As a professional engineer, I bring strong math skills, particularly in Secondary 4 Mathematics and beyond. I’m dedicated to innovative teaching, supporting students individually to grasp complex concepts.
I also teach French, drawing from my own bilingual background, and computer software skills like Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
I prioritize creating a supportive, inclusive environment where students feel valued and empowered. Education, to me, is about more than just knowledge—it’s about building confidence and fostering a love for learning.

Kanerahtiio Hemlock
Cultural History Teacher
I have 15 years of experience as a teacher. I began in 2003 at Karihwanoron elementary school in Kahnawake where I taught for 4 years. In 2009 I taught Social Studies at Kahnawake Survival. Since 2012 when the First Nations Regional Adult Education Center began, I taught history in the Americas from a native perspective. Over the years I taught beginner Kanienʼkéha classes. I’ve given presentations and workshops to students and faculty at McGill, Concordia, Vanier, Champlain College and Dawson. Currently I divide my time between the FNRAEC and Dawson as their Indigenous pedagogical consultant.
Note: In 2018, Kanerahtiio’s program on Indigenous self-sustainability won the national Ken Spencer award for innovation in teaching.

Over a span of 30 years, I worked under the KEC at Kateri School, Karonhianonhnha tsi Ionteriwaiensthakhwa, and Kahnawake Survival School. I spent around 5 years working at Step By Step Child and Family Center and a couple of years working for the A.M.B.E. school board, serving the three district schools of Akwesasne. Presently, I am working under the First Nations Adult Education School Council as the regional director for the First Nations Regional Adult Education Center in Kahnawake.

Over the 9 years I have been with the FNRAEC I have to say the most rewarding part of my job has been seeing each student accomplish and surpass their goals.
I am looking forward to the future of the FNRAEC and what we can offer our students academically.
